Define the records before counting
Inventory names, numbers, exact addresses, vehicle identifiers, messages and payment details in the source. Decide which fields the analysis needs. Keep private originals in authorized systems with appropriate access. An anonymous ID can still be linkable internally; it is not a promise that every dataset is fully de-identified.
A worked example
Fictional transformation: a private job record becomes Demo J-01, a broad service category, a rounded example travel scenario and invented amounts for training. The public example is labeled fictional. Simply blurring a name while leaving a phone number in a tooltip, URL or filename would not accomplish the intended privacy boundary.
Resolve the gap in evidence
Build a separate demonstration dataset instead of editing customer records into public content casually. Remove hidden spreadsheet sheets, comments, embedded metadata and query parameters that could disclose information. Never place free-text customer details in analytics events or a campaign link. Review the exact artifact that will be shared.
Check whether it worked
Open the final export and inspect visible and hidden content using the relevant tools. Search for known sensitive patterns and have the responsible person approve real-data use when appropriate. Keep a clear statement of what was changed. This is a practical data-handling workflow, not a comprehensive legal-compliance determination.
