Inspect the customer’s path
Record the tested URL, tool, device profile, network setting, date and whether the page was cached. Review the largest visible content, layout movement and interaction delays. Current Core Web Vitals cover loading, responsiveness and visual stability; field data summarizes eligible real-user observations, while a lab run simulates specified conditions.
A worked example
Fictional diagnosis: a service page downloads a multi-megabyte decorative image before the main contact content appears. A lab trace identifies the image as a major loading resource. Replacing it with an appropriately sized version improves that test. The owner can report the measured before-and-after lab result, but cannot claim the site’s field Core Web Vitals passed without actual field evidence.
Choose the next action
Ask the maintainer to prioritize the resource or behavior supported by the trace: oversized images, unnecessary scripts, blocking assets or unstable dimensions. Preserve a baseline and change one material issue at a time where practical. Avoid installing several optimization plugins without checking interactions, form behavior and maintenance ownership.
Check whether it worked
Repeat the test under the same conditions and inspect the actual page on a phone. Confirm that images remain useful, text is readable and contact actions still work. Check field data later when available and identify its coverage limits. A performance score is a diagnostic signal; use inquiry and job evidence to evaluate the business outcome.
